The constitution of the subject in childhood: the function of the Other in Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalysis
Keywords:
constitution of the subject, childhood, symbolic Other, mirror stage, Oedipus complexAbstract
This article examines the constitution of the subject in childhood from a psychoanalytic perspective, taking the function of the Other as the symbolic operator of this process. The argument reconstitutes the Freudian formulation of infantile sexuality and the Oedipus complex, follows the Lacanian rereading that situates the emergence of the ego in the mirror stage and that of the subject in the order of the signifier, and examines the thesis, now consensual in the field, that maternal and paternal functions designate symbolic positions rather than biological attributes or specific family arrangements. It is argued that the child's subjectivity is not a natural given but an effect of symbolic and imaginary relations mediated by language and by the desire of the Other. Particular attention is paid to demarcating theoretical traditions that debates on childhood tend to conflate: mirror stage, transitional object, depressive position, sensorimotor stage and semiotic mediation name distinct operations, formulated within mutually incompatible epistemologies, and the intelligibility gained by juxtaposing them is only apparent. It is concluded that care for childhood presupposes offering the child a symbolic place and a listening oriented by singularity, and that psychoanalysis contributes to this field as a mode of reading, not as a developmental intervention technique.
