Author Guidelines

Before you submit

Submissions must be original, must not be under consideration elsewhere, and must fall within one of the four strands set out in the Aims and Scope. Manuscripts outside scope are declined at screening without external review.

Article types

  • Original research — up to 8,000 words including references. Empirical or theoretical work reporting new findings or arguments.
  • Reviews — up to 10,000 words. Systematic, scoping or critical reviews. Systematic reviews must report the search strategy in full and should follow PRISMA.
  • Clinical case studies — up to 6,000 words. Must state the consent obtained and the steps taken to anonymise.
  • Editorials and commentaries — up to 2,500 words. Commissioned or proposed to the editors in advance.

Preparing the manuscript

  • Submit in .docx, .rtf or .odt. PDF is accepted only for supplementary material.
  • Include an abstract of up to 250 words and three to six keywords. Empirical papers should use a structured abstract (Background, Methods, Results, Conclusions).
  • Cite in APA 7th edition. Include DOIs for all references that have one.
  • Remove author names, affiliations, acknowledgements and self-identifying references from the manuscript file: review is double-anonymous. Cite your own prior work in the third person.
  • Tables and figures numbered, captioned, and cited in the text. Figures at 300 dpi or as vector files.
  • Manuscripts may be submitted in English. Authors writing in a second language are encouraged to have the text reviewed by a fluent colleague before submission; language alone is not grounds for rejection, but a text that cannot be assessed will be returned.

Required declarations

Every submission must include, on a separate title page:

  • Author contributions — the specific contribution of each author, following the CRediT taxonomy where possible. All listed authors must meet the ICMJE criteria.
  • ORCID for each author, where held.
  • Funding — all sources, with grant numbers, or an explicit statement that none were received.
  • Competing interests — financial and non-financial, for every author, or an explicit statement of none.
  • Ethics approval — the approving body and reference number for any research involving human participants, and confirmation of informed consent.
  • Data availability — where the underlying data are held and on what terms, or the reason they cannot be shared. Clinical confidentiality is an accepted reason; inconvenience is not.
  • Use of generative AI — any use of generative artificial intelligence in producing the manuscript must be disclosed, naming the tool and describing what it was used for. AI systems cannot be listed as authors: they cannot take responsibility for the work.

After acceptance

Accepted manuscripts are copy-edited and returned to the corresponding author for approval of proofs. Only errors introduced in production, and factual corrections, may be made at proof stage. Articles are published as soon as proofs are approved.

Fees

This journal charges no submission fee and no article processing charge. Publication is free to authors and free to readers.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The submission falls within one of the four strands set out in the journal's Aims and Scope.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The manuscript file has been anonymised: author names, affiliations, acknowledgements and self-identifying references have been removed.
  • A separate title page carries the author contributions, ORCID identifiers, funding, competing interests, ethics approval, data availability and any use of generative AI.
  • The text follows APA 7th edition, with DOIs supplied for all references that have one.
  • Research involving human participants states the approving ethics committee and reference number, and confirms informed consent.
  • Clinical material is anonymised to the point of non-identification, or accompanied by written consent.
  • Tables and figures are numbered, captioned and cited in the text.

Articles

Original research across the four strands of the journal's scope: psychoanalysis and applied clinical psychology; neuroscience and cognitive therapy integration; public mental health; and ethics and global mental health policy. Empirical, conceptual and case-based work are all appropriate, provided the method by which the claims could be tested — or disconfirmed — is stated.

Up to 8,000 words including references. Double-anonymous peer review by at least two independent reviewers.

Reviews

Systematic, scoping and critical reviews of literature bearing on the journal's scope. Systematic reviews must report the search strategy in full and should follow PRISMA; narrative and critical reviews must state how the literature was selected, so the reader can judge what was left out.

Up to 10,000 words including references. Double-anonymous peer review. Reviews that merely summarise, without an argument about what the literature adds up to, are declined at screening.

Authors retain copyright in their work and grant this journal the right of first publication.

Work published in this journal is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence, which allows others to share and adapt the work provided the author and this journal are credited.

Authors may enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the published version of the work — for example, deposit in an institutional repository or inclusion in a book — with an acknowledgement of its initial publication here. Authors are encouraged to post their work online before and during the submission process; preprint deposit does not prejudice consideration.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.

Personal data are processed on the lawful basis of the legitimate interest in operating a scholarly publication and, where applicable, on consent. Data subjects may request access to, correction of, or erasure of their personal data by writing to the contact address listed on this site. Erasure requests are honoured except where the data form part of the permanent scholarly record of a published article — authorship and affiliation of published work cannot be withdrawn without a formal correction or retraction.

Reviewer identities are held in confidence indefinitely and are not disclosed to authors, to other reviewers, or to third parties.
