A psychoanalytic perspective on the role of sports performance in building identity and ego in adolescents
Keywords:
psychoanalysis; identity; ego; sports performance; adolescenceAbstract
AbstractThis article presents a psychoanalytic analysis of how sports performance influences the construction of identity and ego in adolescents. Drawing on the theories of Freud, Erikson, and Winnicott, it explores how sports practice may foster emotional maturity, identity cohesion, and the ability to deal with frustration and external pressure. It highlights the role of competition, parental projection, and group experiences in either strengthening or weakening the ego. Based on a qualitative literature review, the study concludes that sports can provide a symbolic space for psychic elaboration and re-signification, contributing to emotional integration and healthy adolescent development.
