Collective unconscious and family constellation: what Jung knew before Hellinger
Keywords:
collective unconscious, archetypes, analytical psychology, family constellation, transgenerational transmissionAbstract
This article examines the hypothesis that Jung's concept of the collective unconscious anticipates, in its logical structure, the notion of a family unconscious underlying Bert Hellinger's family constellations. The terms in which Jung distinguished the personal from the collective unconscious, and defined the archetype as an inherited empty form rather than a transmitted image, are first reconstituted; these formulations are then confronted with the Hellingerian propositions of orders of love, systemic conscience and entanglement. The comparison proceeds along four axes: the suprapersonal stratum of the psyche, the unit of transmission, the mechanism by which the excluded returns, and the route to cure. It is argued that convergence between the two authors is real but asymmetrical: both posit psychic determinations exceeding the subject's biography, yet Jung operates in the register of species and form, whereas Hellinger operates in the register of lineage and factual content. The common reading of family constellations as an application of analytical psychology is therefore imprecise, and the more consistent affiliation of Hellinger's device lies in the transgenerational tradition of systemic therapy. The clinical value of this encounter depends on preserving the distinction rather than dissolving it.
