Abstract

This essay examines the hypothesis that song may be read as a formation of the unconscious, alongside the dream, the joke and the slip, and discusses what this approximation permits and what it does not authorize one to assert. The argument reconstitutes four psychoanalytic readings of musical experience — sublimation in Freud, symbol and individuation in Jung, the voice as object and the real in Lacan, potential space and the transitional object in Winnicott — and confronts them with a reduced set of Brazilian popular songs and film music, taken as material for textual analysis rather than as illustration. It is argued that music operates upon affective registers prior to speech, and that this priority, far from granting musical listening privileged access to the repressed, is precisely what renders its interpretations less controllable. The conclusion holds that psychoanalytic readings of musical works produce hypotheses about the work and about the listener who interprets it, not about the psychic life of its authors, and that the clinical yield of the proposal depends on maintaining this distinction.
