Fundamental concepts of Freudian psychoanalysis and their contemporary empirical support
Keywords:
Freud, unconscious, repression, transference, epistemology of psychoanalysisAbstract
This article reviews four structuring concepts of Freudian psychoanalysis — the unconscious, repression, transference and dream-work — and examines to what extent each has found correspondence, throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, in empirical research programmes external to the psychoanalytic tradition. The path is twofold: the original formulation of each concept within the Freudian corpus is first reconstituted and situated in the clinical and theoretical moment of its production; these formulations are then confronted with findings from cognitive psychology, sleep neuroscience and psychotherapy process research. It is argued that the question of psychoanalysis's scientific status has often been poorly framed, treating the Freudian edifice as a single block to be accepted or rejected as a whole, when its propositions possess markedly unequal degrees of testability. The convergence observed does not retroactively validate metapsychology; it displaces the debate towards which propositions are testable, by what means, and with what consequences for clinical practice.
