Depression as a destiny of loss: the Freudian matrix and its post-Freudian reformulations

This article reconstructs the psychoanalytic reading of depression from the inaugural thesis of Mourning and Melancholia — that the melancholic condition results not from loss itself, but from a particular destiny given to loss — and follows the reformulations this thesis received throughout the twentieth century. Three linked operations are examined within the Freudian matrix: narcissistic identification with the lost object, withdrawal of investment into the ego, and the redirection of hostility against the agency thus constituted. Against this background, four reformulations are discussed: Abraham's, which locates oral ambivalence at the origin of the condition; Klein's, which converts loss into a structural position of development; Bowlby's, which reinscribes it in the actual history of separations; and Kohut's and Winnicott's, which displace it towards the environment's failure to sustain the self. It is argued that these formulations are not variants of a single hypothesis but divergent answers to a shared question, and that the divergence bears directly on the direction of treatment. The specific contribution of psychoanalysis to the field of depression is neither aetiological nor a competitor to descriptive diagnosis: it consists in restoring to the depressive complaint the dimension of a conflict.
