Transference in psychosis: the status of the bond and its consequences for clinical handling
Keywords:
psychosis, transference, clinical handling, Freud, LacanAbstract
This article examines the status and handling of transference in the clinic of psychosis, a field in which the concept reaches its limit of validity and requires reformulation. It departs from the Freudian objection — grounded in the theory of narcissism — according to which the psychotic subject, having withdrawn libidinal investment from objects, would be inaccessible to transference, and reconstitutes the path by which this objection was displaced without being simply discarded. It is argued that a transferential bond is indeed established in psychosis, but according to a distinct economy: it is not organised around the subject supposed to know, it is not sustained by the supposition of a repressed meaning to be deciphered, and it does not tolerate interpretation as a central operation. The most regular modalities of this bond are examined — erotomanic, persecutory and projective-identificatory — along with the iatrogenic risks associated with each. It is sustained that the position of secretary to the alienated, formulated by Lacan, and the function of regulating jouissance described by Soler are not mutually exclusive alternatives but two moments of a single mode of handling. It is concluded that the clinical specificity of psychosis lies not in the absence of transference but in the requirement that the analyst occupy a place which does not summon the enigma.
