Suicide and subjectivity in ruins: nexum, desire and symbolic failure
Keywords:

This article offers a clinical and metapsychological reinterpretation of suicide through the lens of the Ethical-Symbolic Theory of Subjectivity (TSES), focusing on the concept of Nexum: the final act of a subjectivity whose symbolic structure has collapsed. Rejecting both psychiatric pathologization and therapeutic moralization, it argues that suicide is not a will to die, but rather the consequence of a breakdown in the symbolic vectors that sustain desire. Through the articulation of the six vectors of desire (purpose, belonging, singularity, transcendence, utility, and elaborated finitude) and the symbolic instances of subjectivity (Éthos, Mnémethos, Anima Pulsa, and Egos), the article develops a clinical model of language in ruins, in which the analyst is called upon not to interpret what the patient says, but to sustain what can no longer be said. Nexum is described as a subjective implosion that evades the field of transference, requiring a tragic, ethical-symbolic mode of listening, founded on the holding of absence. In conclusion, suicide — when listened to outside the framework of prevention — emerges as an ethical cry of a subject in collapse, not as a clinical failure, but as an ultimate question addressed to the place of the Other.
